FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, a full rebuild of the 2003 PlayStation 2 horror classic, is now available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Published by KOEI TECMO America and developed by Team NINJA, the remake arrives alongside a free collaboration DLC featuring costumes from KONAMI's SILENT HILL f, with a discounted Steam bundle offering both games together.

Minakami Village exists in permanent night. It's a place that vanished from every map, trapped in darkness and populated by vengeful spirits still searching for the twin girls who once escaped their ritual. The remake rebuilds this setting from the ground up with refined textures, sharper lighting and shadow contrast that leans hard into the suffocating atmosphere. Spatial audio replaces the original sound design, wrapping the village's creaking silence and sudden violence around the player in a way the PS2 hardware never could. Every corridor, every abandoned house, every stretch of empty path is designed to make you feel watched.

What you do in those spaces is unlike almost anything else in horror. The Camera Obscura, the series' signature weapon, is a camera that captures and seals away wraiths. Combat means raising the viewfinder, framing a spirit in the lens and shooting at the right moment, turning the act of looking directly at something terrifying into your only means of survival. The remake reworks this system with new focus, zoom and filter options, along with new Special Shots that deal heavier damage and repel spirits more effectively. The tension is baked into the mechanic itself: you can't fight what you can't see through the lens, and you can't see through the lens without getting close.

Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura visit a childhood stream soon to be submerged by a dam. While Mio reminisces, Mayu is lured away by a crimson butterfly, drawn toward the village that shouldn't exist. Separated from her sister, Mio must search Minakami Village for Mayu while piecing together the settlement's tragic history. Her path through the village unknowingly retraces its past, and within its depths she uncovers the truth behind a forbidden ritual that was never meant to be seen. The story pulls in two directions at once: forward toward Mayu and escape, backward into the village's buried horrors.

The free SILENT HILL f DLC adds Shimizu Hinako's Navy Sailor School Uniform, wearable by Mio, and a Fox Mask accessory that both sisters can equip. A Digital Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with a digital soundtrack, art book and bonus costumes for both characters. The game features Japanese and English voiceover. At its simplest, this is a horror game where your only weapon forces you to stare directly at the thing trying to kill you, rebuilt for hardware that can finally make that experience as claustrophobic as it was always meant to be.
