Killing Floor 3 is the latest entry in Tripwire Interactive's co-op action horror series, available now on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Set in 2091, it drops up to six players into a future where megacorporation Horzine has engineered an army of bioengineered monsters called Zeds, and a rebel group named Nightfall stands as the last organised resistance against them.

The core of the game remains what it has always been: wave-based survival against increasingly dangerous Zeds, earning dosh between rounds to gear up for whatever comes next. Every enemy in the roster has been redesigned with smarter AI, making them faster and more strategic than previous entries. Players choose from an expanding roster of Specialists, each bringing distinct skills to the fight, then customise their loadouts from an arsenal spanning flamethrowers, shotguns, katanas, and hundreds of mods and gadgets. The recent Operation: Deep Freeze update pushed combat pacing closer to Killing Floor 2's tempo, reducing Zed health across the board while cranking up their damage output and spawn rates. The result is a faster, more lethal rhythm where efficient teamwork and quick target prioritisation matter more than raw firepower. New mission length options now include a "Long" setting with ten rounds of escalating difficulty capped by a boss fight, giving squads who want to dig in a reason to stay.

The update also introduced the Scavenger, a new Zed type originally traced back to the Dreadzone in old London, representing a complete symbiosis of Horzine's Mire experiments with invertebrate life. Scavengers hunt in packs, targeting already wounded players with toxic fumes and armoured claws that hide critical weak points beneath their shells. Their alpha variant is the game's first new boss addition, a massive creature that cannibalises its own dead to gain regenerative properties and empowered attacks. Alongside them came the Tekko-Kagi, a pair of retractable triple-bladed claws for the Ninja class that reward high-risk close combat, and the M-97 Trench Gun, a slam-fire shotgun loaded with incendiary rounds by default. Dual-wielding also arrived for the first time, currently supporting the Bloodhound P330 and the fully automatic Krait pistol, with more weapons planned as groundwork for a future Gunslinger class.

The narrative threads through seasonal updates that track Nightfall's pursuit of Dr. Moorcroft, a scientist whose increasingly unstable experiments with extradimensional forces called the Mire threaten to make him unstoppable. Operation: Deep Freeze sends operatives to the Brunt Ice Shelf of Antarctica, where Moorcroft has been tracked to a remote research base with an unusually large dig site. There, Nightfall forms an uneasy alliance with Masterson III, grandson of Bill Masterson Sr. and a former Horzine Chief of Security who was scapegoated for an outbreak called the Clamefield incident. Cast out and left with nothing but mercenary work, he eventually joined Nightfall as a no-nonsense Specialist carrying a familiar voice into a new decade.

The maps themselves function as more than arenas. Each location is a hot zone where the Zed outbreak needs containing, and the environments offer interactive elements like turrets, fans, and traps that players can activate to turn the terrain against incoming waves. Tripwire's M.E.A.T. System handles the gore, delivering persistent blood and additional points of dismemberment that make every weapon feel distinct in how it tears through enemies. The Antarctic Base map centres on an abandoned research facility where some of the frozen-over experiments may still be active, adding environmental threats to an already hostile landscape.
Beneath the gore and the co-op chaos, the game builds its stakes around corporate power run unchecked. Horzine created the Zeds as an obedient army, a product line that escaped its intended purpose, and now the people fighting to survive are doing so against a threat that was manufactured for profit. Nightfall isn't a military force or a government response. It's a rebel group, underfunded and outgunned, scraping together whatever weapons and allies it can find. Each seasonal update expands both the arsenal and the story, with Supply Passes offering free and paid reward tracks that never expire. The game supports solo play for those who want it, but Killing Floor 3 is built around the pressure of six players holding a line together, burning through ammo and dosh while the waves get worse and the Zeds get smarter.
