Returnal is a third-person roguelike shooter that traps its protagonist in a loop of death and rebirth on a hostile alien world. Selene, an astronaut who crash-lands on the shape-shifting planet Atropos, must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape. Isolated and alone, she fights for survival only to be defeated again and again, forced to restart her journey every time she dies.

The planet changes with every cycle, and so do the items at Selene's disposal. Each loop offers new combinations of alien technology and upgrades, empowering different combat strategies with every rebirth. Combat is fast and relentless, drawing from bullet hell traditions where waves of projectiles fill the screen amid explosive encounters with ruthless enemies. Firing modes switch instinctively through a single adaptive trigger, letting you shift straight from aiming down sights to your weapon's alternative fire. Equipment and resources demand careful management because death strips everything away, sending you back to the crash site to begin again.

The decaying world surrounding Selene is built from stark and contrasting environments, each one procedurally generated to ensure no two runs feel identical. Scavenging alien tech enhances abilities for future cycles, while fragments of Selene's memories surface gradually as she explores the constantly evolving terrain. The planet itself feels bound to her story, its shifting architecture mirroring the mystery that stalks every step forward.

Beyond the main journey, the Tower of Sisyphus offers a distinct challenge. Visible from the crash site once the Icarian Grapnel is unlocked, this nearly endless ascending gauntlet focuses purely on combat and score, containing exclusive items, Scout logs, and unseen fragments from Selene's story. Co-op Mode adds another dimension entirely, allowing two players to navigate the labyrinth of Atropos together. Each player controls a different version of Selene drawn from different cycles, summoned through a Chronosis device located in each biome. The host player's progress determines the available item pool for the session, keeping the hostile nature of Atropos firmly intact even with a partner at your side.

Returnal is designed for extreme replayability, built around the tension of pushing further than the last attempt while piecing together a haunting narrative one death at a time. Every rebirth reshapes the battlefield, demanding you dust yourself off and face whatever Atropos has become.
