Marathon is an extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV, a derelict colony where cybernetic mercenaries called Runners trespass into hostile territory to scavenge valuables and fight their way back out alive. Developed by Bungie, the studio behind Destiny and Halo, the game drops players into a dark sci-fi world where deserted research facilities, rugged landscapes and security outposts hold the remnants of a vanished expedition. No one knows what happened a century ago when the Marathon expedition went dark, and as a trespasser into UESC territory you are positioned to piece that story together while looting everything that isn't bolted down.

Runs begin with infiltration and end with exfiltration, if you survive. Tense moments of exploration break into fast PvP combat where gunplay is responsive, supplies are finite and preparation is rewarded. Players can enter as a crew of two or three, go alone in solo lobbies, or sneak into in-progress crew lobbies as Rook, a lone scavenger carrying no starting gear and nothing to lose. Proximity chat allows uneasy alliances with rival Runners against mutual threats, though those allies can turn hostile without warning. A lone survivor can reboot their entire crew even from death, making total elimination the only safe play.

Six equippable Runner shells provide distinct playstyle foundations. Destroyer, Recon, Thief and others each serve as a chassis for deeper customisation through scavenged moddable weapons, body implants and core system upgrades. Crew composition matters, with players strategising each run to form combinations that maximise their collective strengths across fights and objectives. Exfiltrating successfully advances seasonal power, earns cosmetics and feeds into stronger builds assembled from stolen loot. Six competing factions offer contracts that grow baseline power through season-long unlocks: shell upgrades, stronger starting loadouts and expanded vault space.

Each zone escalates in difficulty, building toward the endgame locked in orbit above the colony. Once the way opens, players bring their strongest builds to Cryo Archive aboard the UESC Marathon itself, solving raid-like security measures to unseal frozen vaults and pillage the artifacts within. Cramped corridors force conflict with fully geared enemy crews racing for the same prize, culminating in a seventh vault that holds an entity even the UESC fears.

Marathon launches in March 2026 on PC from Bungie, the studio whose co-founder Alex Seropian helped build the original Marathon trilogy. Every successful extraction puts hard-won gear back on the line for the next run, where greater fortunes and greater losses wait in equal measure.
