The Last Starship is a 2D space construction and simulation game where you design, build, and upgrade your own vessel before taking it out into the cosmos. Your crew awaits orders aboard whatever ship you can imagine, whether that's a vessel born from your wildest engineering fantasies or a recreation of legendary craft from iconic movies and fiction.
Construction begins with the fundamentals. A reactor powers your engines, then comes the crucial pipework and electrical systems that keep everything running. Life support demands attention because if it falters, your journey ends. You'll stop by local space colonies to gather equipment and supplies, layering systems upon systems until your creation is ready for the void. The Steam Workshop opens this creativity to the wider community, letting you share your designs and send others into epic adventures aboard ships you've built.
Combat presents its own set of decisions. Lasers offer precision shots while railguns deliver devastating impact. You might favour heavier armour for resilience or enhanced agility to outmanoeuvre foes, perhaps stealth to slip by unnoticed or raw firepower to dominate. Each encounter demands tactical thinking, careful planning, and precise strikes rather than simple aggression.
The sector map reveals a procedurally generated universe filled with missions, anomalies, and unexpected discoveries. A diverse array of characters populate this space, some allies and some adversaries, each carrying their own stories and requests for help. You might embark on daring rescues, deliver vital cargo, or hunt down notorious pirates. Your choices carve a unique path through an ever-changing galaxy, shaping whether you become a pirate hunter, a resourceful miner, a space engineer, or a reliable spacebus driver.
Space is cold, dark, and vast. Survival requires gathering water, oxygen, and fuel to maintain your ships and sustain your crew. Drones can salvage space wrecks while lasers extract raw materials for massive mining rigs, and establishing seamless operations becomes crucial to securing what you need. The Last Starship comes from Introversion Software, the indie developer behind the BAFTA winning Prison Architect. The game launched in February 2026 and receives regular updates with new missions and gameplay enhancements based on player feedback.
